Three students from Foundation University garnered the 2nd, 4th and 5th places during the Regional Finals of the 14th Annual Philippine Statistics Quiz Bowl held Nov. 14 at the University of Cebu.
This was announced by Ruben Sanchez, team coach, and confirmed by Ariel Florendo, provincial statistics officer of the National Statistics Office.
The FU students who bagged the top slots in the regional quiz bowl were Christian Bungcasan, Industrial Engineering student who got 2nd place; Mahalel Cuba, Accountancy student who got 3rd place; and Jerry Fel Tungcab, Nursing student who garnered 4th place.
The champion was from the University of San Carlos who got 29 points, two points ahead of Bungcasan.
The three students from Foundation represented Oriental Negros after they won the first three slots during the Provincial eliminations.
“Winning in the provincial eliminations was guite an achievement for both the student-participants and the University considering that all Top 3 places were won by Foundation University; that was very laudable indeed,” Sanchez said, who was assisted as coach by Percival Carino.
The FU freshmen beat contestants from Silliman University, St. Paul University, Negros Oriental State University, AMA Computer College, STI, Colegio de Sta. Catalina de Alejandria, and Asian College of Science & Technology.
Sponsored by the NSO, the Philippine Statistics Quiz is an annual contest started in 1992 to test the knowledge of first year college students on statistics.
It aims to instill the value of statistics among students, and to measure the effectiveness of the High School Statistics curriculum.
The Philippine Statistical Association and the NSO managed the Stats Quiz with inter-agency committees including the Commission on Higher Education, the Department of Education, the Department of Science & Technology, and the National Economic Development Authority.
