Greyhound spikers bag Boracay beachvolley title

Sweet victory.  After winning the 1st Nestea Beachvolley title in 2001, the FU team won anew this year, nailing its second men’s crown after seven years, bagging the much-coveted title of Beachvolley Kings with a 15-21, 21-14, 15-19 victory over University of Southern Philippines Foundation - Cebu in the championship match held April 26 in Boracay.

The FU duo of Rolando A. Agus and Arnel V. Amadeo, junior students of the College of Business Administration, showed their skills and prowess over their seasoned rivals by using their height advantage to the hilt in their victory over USPF.

Both had made it to the Boracay finals by topping the Visayan elimination round held April 8 to 10 at the University of St. La Salle-Bacolod.  The tandem won over teams from the University of San Agustin-Iloilo, University of the Visayas-Cebu, and finally, the host-school La Salle where Agus and Amadeo swept the La Salle duo in two sets, earning their seat to the Boracay finals.

In the Boracay finals, the FU tandem slugged it out with Manila’s Philippine Christian University in their first assignment, winning 2-1.

The duo won their next match against University of Mindanao-Tagum (UMT) to enter the semi-final round 2-1.  The semi-final round saw Agus and Amadeo faced with their elimination final’s rival University of St. La Salle-Bacolod, repeating their performance by beating the La Salle duo in two sets anew.

In winning Foundation U’s second men’s crown since 2001, coach Dwight Esenio Sun expressed is heartfelt thanks and appreciation for the FU administration’s support and assistance in making their win possible.

"We patiently but intently waited for this championship crown to return to FU after winning it in 2001, and after seven years of consistently landing in the Top 3 of the Boracay finals, This championship crown is a testament of patience, perseverance, and hardwork prevailing in the end for us," Coach Sun said.

For their part, both Agus and Amadeo expressed relief and pride in bagging the crown after last year’s 2nd runner up finish for the duo.

"It’s a dream come true for us.  We’re happy to win a 2nd championship crown for FU, for our coach, and for our family," said Agus, who will use most of his earnings to pay for his schooling while the rest goes to his parents.
