FU campuses go wireless

Foundation University got another boost in its thrust on information technology when it started providing Internet access to all parts of the Main and North campuses, thereby promoting better education modes for its students.

Board of Trustee Chairman and Vice-President for Finance & Administration Victor Vicente G. Sinco said the University now has wireless fidelity (WIFI) accessibility in all parts of the main and the North campuses, including inside the University gymnasium and at the Smeets Hall dormitory.

To avail of WIFI services, students, faculty, and staff only need to register their laptops, iPhones, and iPods at the University Data Center headed by Engr. Joel Balajadia.

Sinco said the aim of providing fast and easy Internet access to the FU community is portability, allowing users to maximize their high-tech gadgets anywhere in the FU campuses.

Foundation University has a multi platform feature for Windows, Linux, and Macintosh users.  Thirty units of brand new Mac Mini units were recently added to the IT laboratory, to allow students a diverse use of Windows, Linux, and Mac computers.

Two multi-media rooms will have overhead projectors with added features of digital cameras to make teachers’ presentations and lectures easier and more convenient.

For public announcement and information purposes, the FU Administration has also installed two digital bulletins for both campuses in front of the lobbies.

A few years back, enrollment at FU was made faster and paperless because of the online transactions.  In July this year, paying online will also be launched using Globe’s G-cash, the regular credit cards, and SmartMoney to facilitate for easy and faster way for the students to do business with the University.  "Long queues will become obsolete and a thing of the past," Sinco said.

Also for energy conservation measures, some classrooms have been installed with motion-censor switches for lights and electric fans that automatically turn off after few minutes.
