The Romantics (writers and artists during the Romantic Period) passionately yet creatively cried against what the Industrial Age brought to mankind.  Humanity was ripped off its dignity and individuality, nature was raped and ravished, and faith in God gradually dwindled.  Using their pens as weapons, the Romantics wrote wonderful poems, essays and novels that brought about their innermost sentiments.  poems like “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud” by William Wordsworth and “Ode to a Nightingale” by John Keats urge the readers to appreciate even the simplest of creatures.  “She Walks in Beauty” by Percy Bysshe Shelley and the Lucy Poems by Wordsworth encourage us to celebrate love and the warmth of friendship.  Most of William Blake’s poems point us back to God, the Source, Sustainer and Redeemer.  All theses and more attempted to regain what industrial progress has robbed man of.

All of these colorful, dynamic and passionate classroom learning has compelled us to share them with the rest of the students.  The English 53 class of Mrs. Otilia Gaudan decided to hold a quiz bowl, which we deemed a good tool in spreading the insights we’ve learned.  We purposely planned for a quiz bowl to develop in the studdents their appreciation for and interest in the Romantic Period, which has a great influence to the world, not just in literature and the arts, but also in politics, children’s rights and other aspects. We invited the different colleges/departments of Foundation University, stipulating a quite handsome cash prize for the win ners.  We encouraged them to study hard on Romantic Period, specifically English Romanticism.  So while the contestants prepared, we also did our  share of preparation-formulating questions, following up contestants, making a p[rogram, doing a lot of paper works, etc. – to make sure the event would be well organized.

Eight of the ten colleges/departments joined the Inter-Departmental Quiz Bowl, sending their three-person teams.  The participating college were the College of Nursing, College of Computer Studies, College of Business Administration, College of Hospitality Management, College of Education, College of Agriculture, College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Industrial Engineering and Technology.  The contest was held on October 7th 2011, Friday at 3:45 in the afternoon in the Sofia Soller Sinco Hall.  Indeed, the quiz bowl became an acid test to the participants’ knowhow on the topic.  All teams did their best, showing how well-preparted they were by the racing scores projected on the wall.  in the end, Emma Estores, Miriam Colina and Richard Bongayon of CBA came out as the champion, bringing home 1000Php cash prize. SIET representaives Joyce Anne Biala and twin sisters Dorcas and Shinar Ragudo bagged the first runner up award with 300Php, while CA contestants Jireh Bagundol, Agnes Guanella Cafe and Faioth Patay were second runners up plus 200Php cash prize.  All contestants were awarded Certificates of Appreciation.

The event was made possible due to imaginative and persuasive ideas of our dear teacher, Mrs. Gaudan.  She challenged and urged the nine of us to make this event a reality.  She was with us all along, striking the healthy balance of encouraging and rebuking us as necessary. We are truly grateful to her.

The competition was participated in by all Architecture and Fine Arts students with selected students from the College of Hospitality Management for the student category. n

The staff of the IT Entheos were the participants for the professional category.

The activity was sponsored by the SG Bank and the United Architects of the Philippines Student Auxilliary-Foundation University Chapter in coordination with Robinson’s Place-Dumaguete and Foundation University’sInstitute of Youth Sports for Peace.

Architect Victor Vicente Sinco, FU’s Vice President for Finance and Administration was there to show his support.

Some of the winners are Zharysse Barong and Edwin Lucin for the student category and George Aranas, Carlo Simpao and Jonas Curativo for the professional category.

To our dear students and my colleagues, I welcome all of you to the College of Arts and Sciences of Foundation University. I am Remedios May Cimafranca and I am the Dean of the college. I am both happy and pleased to welcome you to this amazing community. If you are squirming in your seats right now feeling unsure or uncomfortable and probably wondering if you have made the right decision of being here, I can assure each and every one of you that you are here because you deserve to be and because you can bring something new and exciting to this diverse learning community. So welcome!

I imagine some of you have arrived knowing exactly what you want to study and intend to stay focused on that field. I think that’s great. However, I also encourage you to be open to new ideas, experiences, and directions. You are learning from great teachers and professors, the best and the brightest surrounding you, and you will undoubtedly be challenged to think about new topics or even view old topics in new ways. You never know when something might pique your interest. So, my advice to you is to be open-minded and continue to have a positive attitude towards learning!

Look around you. The people sitting in this hall will be your friends, your colleagues, and your mentors. Don’t hesitate to call upon them when you need to — personally or professionally. They will be your best source of support and they will help you make the most of your experience here. I guarantee there will be times when you wonder why you’re here; that’s natural. But the people in this room and on this campus will be there to remind you of the reasons. The relationships you develop here with the faculty, staff, and fellow students will also help you build your career. You are all here because you want to become the movers and shakers of the future. I urge you to make this happen by meeting new people, tapping into new resources, and immersing in the culture and training available to you in the College of Arts and Sciences. The benefits will follow you forever.

I conclude by offering you a simple advice on how to make the best of your experience here at Foundation University. Share your knowledge and skills; don’t keep them to yourself. Challenge yourself and your peers on a daily basis. Embrace one another’s passion for different things – for nature, education, human rights, communities, policies, and practices. Absorb everything. And above all, have fun. Enjoy every moment of your stay here and never forget to learn, to care and to share every step of the way. We are the CAS – we both Care and Share!

Are you familiar with Harry Potter? The boy who survived the evil Lord Voldemort and as a boy, Harry was told he had the power to change the lives of all individuals in the wizarding community. Well, we are no wizarding world and you don’t possess the same power as Harry does but you, too, have the power to change peoples’ lives – the lives of your friends, love ones, mentors and everybody if you will it. As the head of the college, I look forward to doing this with you. Best of luck to each and every one of you! I look forward to a more productive academic year! Thank you.
