COLLEGE OF NURSING

History

Having medical-related programs had always been the dream of Dr. Sinco and his children.  Sometime in the year 2002, when the late Leandro G. Sinco was president of the University, the desire was re-ignited by the spouses Atty. Francisco D. Yap and Atty. Whelma F. Siton-Yap who inspired the late president to consider offering the nursing program.  They actually helped in finding qualified nurses to serve in the Nursing Faculty.  Atty. Whelma Yap is also a registered Nurse.

With a ready faculty line-up, the next big task was to build a Nursing Skills Laboratory that was to be a replica of a hospital.  Research and visits to established Colleges of Nursing in the Visayas gave the Vice-President for Administration, V. Vicente G. Sinco, a clear idea on how to set up the nursing skills laboratory.  The science laboratories in biology, chemistry and physics were also upgraded to meet the needs of the Nursing Program.  Furthermore, the home economics laboratory was re-designed to meet the needs of a nutrition laboratory.

The difficult task of preparing all the documents in accordance with R.A. 9173 (Philippine Nursing Act of 2002), CHED Memo No. 30, S. 2001 and CHED Memo No. 02, S. 2004 fell on the Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Ester V. Tan.  She was supported in this task by the Vice-President for Student Life and External Affairs, Dinno T. Depositario, and by the school nurse, Elba A. Ochotorena.

With these requirements in place, the University pursued its application to open a BSN course with the Commission on Higher Education.

Mrs. Alpha C. Jaculbe, BSN-RN and MAN, served as the first Dean of the College of Nursing.  She was ably supported by faculty members who had the required qualifications and clinical experience. He helped in setting up the College of Nursing.

October 4, 2004, Prof. Nenita P. Tayko was appointed as first Dean of FUCN. She was ably assisted by the following faculty:

  1. Mrs. Josette M. Bancoro
  2. Mrs. Melanie Mae O. Austero
