About the Program
The five-week Intensive English Language Course is offered at Foundation University for Korean students from Kyungsung University. The ESL intensive program components include English language structure and speaking practice, conversation, reading for understanding, writing, grammar, speech lab, computer lab, interactive classes that engage students in role-playing, debate, CNN News discussions, and use of videos for recording speech and diction, and for listening to various English dialects.
Learning Objectives
During the course, students will
• build fluency through building vocabulary and speaking with correct grammar/verb tenses and syntax. Students will be expected to demonstrate academic and conversational fluency in class and in one-to-one tutorials
• practice speaking English used in the university classroom, by learning to ask and answer questions, explain and clarify points, and participate in and lead discussions, debates, and presentations.
• learn to articulate the sounds of English and recognize differences in English dialects.
• learn how to appropriately use linking, pausing, stress, and rhythm in structured speech.
• learn to correct areas in their speech which interfere in communicating with others.
• participate in social interaction such as solving a problem, making arrangements, making decisions with others, and obtaining and providing goods, services and public information
• obtain, process and use specific or general information from a spoken or written text
• give information in spoken or written form, such as a talk, an essay or a set of instructions
• listen to, read, view and respond orally and in writing to media such as stories, plays, films, songs, poems or pictures
• learn to and practice taking tests that lead to passing the IELT

Improvement in fluency and pronunciation depends largely on the students' commitment to the course. Students will be expected to work individually as well as cooperatively with classmates in pairs and small groups. Tasks will frequently be taped (audio or video) and analyzed to build an awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of the students' speech.
ASSESSMENT
Exams will be given weekly, short quizzes, papers, videotaped conversational English, and homework all will be part of the student’s grades. The student will:
1. demonstrate understanding of spoken texts
2. communicate orally
3. demonstrate understanding of written texts
4. communicate in writing
5. vary form and style of writing to suit a wide range of purposes and audiences
6. demonstrate in writing an appreciation of literary texts
7. access, interpret, evaluate, transform and communicate information using a range of sources
8. create, set, review and achieve personal goals for this class
9. work with others to achieve shared goals
10. use appropriate techniques for posing questions, defining problems, drawing
conclusions and flexibly applying findings to create new solutions
The Foundation University grading scale will be used to assess student work and achievement.
